Been swamped lately... between family visits, sister2SISTER bootcamp photography work and a friend staying over, there's hardly a moment to stop and breathe! Luckily, I had a chance to play with my gouache and ink. For me, art therapy's better than yoga though that comes in at a close second (but don't tell the guys at Oasis Yoga, teehee!) A quick session at The Desk (it literally is just a table, but it's my little painting corner) and a mother-daughter pair of dogs practicing their upward dog yoga pose emerged. It'll be used for a Mother's Day promo by Oasis Yoga in Singapore.. how exciting!
My own marvelous mama and perfect papa (and my awesome aunt) have just been visiting Sydney this week so I haven't been online much. Instead, I've been gallivanting around town, staying over at Taronga Zoo's Roar and Snore, visiting the Hunter Valley Vineyards, enjoying concerts at the Opera House, exploring the Jenolan Caves and the Blue Mountains (it HAILED when we were up there. Crazy!) and doing lots of bonding with the folks.
Lots of inspiration came through, including these little chooks for Mother's and Father's Day coming up over the next few months.
They're now available online here and on Etsy (affiliate link).
It's the last week of assignments! Can't believe we're nearly done with all 5 weeks of Lilla Roger's MATS course! It's been a week of collections.. perfect for the hoarder I am. Aside from a ton of art supplies that could outfit a corner shop, fabric scraps, papers and ribbons saved up over the years, these are a few of my other collections lying around. It was very enlightening (and very tiring) digging all of these out, especially to photograph!
Each week's assignment seems to get harder and harder, straying further away from my "style" and comfort zone. I tried to stay positive and challenge myself, and this week's was the toughest challenge of all! I had no idea of what "hyperlush" really meant except that it looked super crazy and made my eyes hurt. Kind of like paisley on a sugar high. Times a thousand.
I had grand plans to make it in crazy colors, so I grabbed my paintbrushes and set to work on the 2 collections I chose.. plushies and my plants (or rather, just their leaves). Here's the result of 2+ hours of continuous painting. 56 different leaf motifs and 7 plushie characters. Let me tell you.. scanning & processing them was a major pain in the butt.
Now, I never do "crazy" colors. I do soft, pretty colors. Usually not too bright or bold. So I started to nudge my tolerance and gave my plushies colors I'd never have chosen if not for this assignment. After all, it's supposed to be hyperlush, right? Crazy explosion of colors and images, layered in one big kaleidoscopic jumble.
I had everything carefully planned out, but when I started playing with my plushies and scanned leaves, I went in a completely different direction than I imagined. I didn't even get to tweak my leaves into crazy colors like I initially planned! Having just one day to finish it all (family was going to arrive and I'd have no time before the assignment was due), I just went with the flow. This is what I ended up with after working like a madwoman for more than 12 hours straight from the painting, cutting, scanning, digital processing, assembly and mock-up creation. Woohoo! The design is starting to grow on me despite not being "my style" at all. I think having the plushies helped a lot in tying it all together with other pieces that are more "me". Regardless, I've had such a fun ride along with my fellow MATSies and am looking forward to continuing with the after party with them all!
