I came across this cheeky guide by [YOKE] called Dating a Designer: 10 things you need to know. It's only hilarious because there's an element of truth in it. What do you think? I found it ..interesting, shall I say, to find myself agreeing with the bulk of the list and that got me thinking. Especially the bit about being a font freak, and the form over function point. And the comic sans. As much I feel sorry for it, please don't use it. Ever.
I never realized I had a font addiction until I showed my friends my compendium of fonts back in high school. I printed out all the characters for every font I had on my computer and had the 70-odd pages spiral-bound (can someone say nerrrd!). I was showing this beauty off and got the rudest awakening when I got stares of disbelief, followed by "why do you need so many fonts??" Now, I finally know it's not an illness. I wasn't a freak. I needed all those fonts and the designer in me was telling me so. I just didn't know it at the time. Same for being a sucker for pretty packaging and bottles, buying things I'd never eat just to own that piece of pretty packaging. It all makes sense...
Cold computer hands, on the other hand (*snickers at the pun*), is a common affliction that affects not only designers. Gamers, designers, programmers, and pretty much anyone working in a cool room on the computer for long stretches of time will get these. And they're horrible. I have to periodically sit on my hands to thaw 'em out.
Do you also possess some of these designer traits? Do you think this is a load of hogwash? Or do you have any other habits, compulsions or secret quirks that other people just don't understand because they're not a (fill in the job) like you?
